ABSTRACT

Objective: Halitosis is the offensive odor emanated by the oral and nasal cavities and perceived by the individual and/or by other people. Halitosis is a symptom that directly impacts on the social aspects of an individual's life and may be a sign for a systemic disorder in some cases. Material and Methods: A search was conducted on the literature in order to gather the main aspects about halitosis and make a review about the main features necessary to the clinical practice when a professional deals with a patient with halitosis. Results: The information was summarized and discussed with a focus on what clinicians should be aware of when dealing with a patient with halitosis. Conclusion: Halitosis is a prevalent symptom that affects approximately 25% of the individuals. Its classification takes into consideration the origin of the compounds producing the malodor. The diagnosis must take into consideration the various etiological possibilities before defining the treatment. The treatment must be focused on the cause and since there is a wide range of possible causes, halitosis needs a multidisciplinary approach (AU)

ABSTRACT

Dental implants have become a routine component of daily dental practice. At the same time, they can cause discomfort, rampant destruction of oral health, or expensive surgical replacement of a failed implant. Early detection of marginal bone loss is vital for treatment planning and implant prognosis. These are designed to best fit various bone types and fail due to many reasons. Understanding the patient's challenges and expectations through honesty is an important part of the treatment, whose success will not only depend on the members of the implantology or technical team, but also on the patient's care when performing their daily hygiene. For this reason, a bibliographic search was carried out in the MEDLINE and PubMed databases on peri-implant discomfort, consulting 30 bibliographical references from the last 5 years.

ABSTRACT

The immaturity of the immune system, associated with Social Determi- nants of Health (SDH), promotes diseases in childhood. Specifically, in the oral cavity, SDH, represented by high sugar consumption, limited access to health services, and poor oral hygiene, favors local and systemic disorders. Thus, the study aimed to associate the SDH, in the context of socioeconomic conditions, monitoring by the health service and aspects related to children's oral health assisted in Basic Health Units (BHU) of a muni- cipality in Ceará. This is an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study with a quan- titative approach conducted with children and their mothers in Acarape - CE. After con- sent, they filled out a questionnaire. Data were analyzed. Of the 70 mothers, 87.14% and 90.00% were aged less than or equal to 30 years and had income up to one minimum wage, respectively. Of the 70 children, 87.14% had their teeth/gums cleaned by their pa- rents or guardian. Of the total, 94.29% never underwent dental care. There was a signifi- cant association between the mother having higher education than incomplete elementary school and cleaning the child's teeth/gums with a toothbrush and toothpaste. A significant association was found between the child eating sweet/stuffed biscuits, not consuming soft drink, and using a toothbrush and dentifrice for oral hygiene. It is concluded that the chil- dren were regularly monitored at the BHU; however, this service was not related to dental care. Despite the absence of this type of follow-up and the consumption of cariogenic foods, the mothers were concerned about their children's oral health, cleaning the oral cavity daily with adequate means.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:Parents play an important role in establishing healthy habits during childhood. Providing necessary oral care to their children significantly contributes to preventing oral health issues. Objective: To verify maternal knowledge about children's oral care in early childhood.Methodology:Thisis a quantitative, exploratoryandobservationalstudy. Data werecollectedthroughtheapplicationof a semistructuredquestionnaire, withquestionsabout maternal knowledgeregarding oral hygiene, eatinghabits, caries involvementandsocioeconomic profile. A descriptivedata analysiswasperformed, followedby a bivariate analysis, usingPearson's chi-square test, considering a 5% significance level. Results:Regardingmothers' knowledge about their children's oral care, it was unsatisfactory in relation to the age at which children should start brushing their teeth by themselves; regarding the use of a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste as hygiene methods, after the first tooth's eruption, and regarding the absence of the deciduous tooth before the permanent molars eruption. Satisfactory knowledge was observed regarding the importance of carrying out restoration in decayed deciduous teeth; the age at which children begin to change deciduous teeth for permanent ones and, carrying out some oral care (fabric and gauze) before the first tooth's eruption. Conclusions:There is a gap in the oral health guidelines provided by dentists, aimed to mothers. The mothers/pregnant women have sufficient knowledge about their baby's oral care, but considering the oral care after the first tooth eruption, the results were critical. It is necessary a greater participation of the dentist in prenatal and growth and development consultations, practicing Health Education (AU).

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and self-recognition for indicators of inflammation suggestive of periodontal disease in military personnel of both genders. The military personnel was recruited to conduct a dental census for the entire population of the Admiral Wandenkolk Training Center of the Brazilian Navy, totaling 409 volunteers. Two groups were formed for further analysis: Group 1- containing exclusively women and Group 2- containing exclusively men. A total of 409 clinical examinations were performed and the questionnaires were analyzed. The results showed that, regarding the military participants, 40.1% were female and 59.9% were male; 87% used dental floss, of which 56% used it daily; 77% brushed three times a day or more; 74.3% reported that they visited the dentist regularly, and the proportion of women who regularly visited the dentist significantly exceeded the proportion of men who did (C.I. 95%; p<0.001); 61.6% said they knew about periodontal disease. The professional evaluation verified the presence of inflammation indicators suggestive of periodontal disease in 45.2% of the participants, of which 37% were female and 63% were male, with no statistical difference between genders (95% CI, p=0.2248). The prevalence of inflammation indicators suggestive of periodontal disease was 45.2%; the self-knowledge of the military about the periodontal disease was low, only 19%; thus a statistical difference was found between the knowledge of females and males; and it was observed that most participants were within the correct frequency for return visits to the dentist.

ABSTRACT

Background: Oral health and oral health care are important in the health care of critically ill patients. Objective: To provide an overview of the relationship between oral health and adverse outcomes in critically ill patients. Methodology: This narrative revision was conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed/Medline and SciELO, with the descriptors oral health, critical care, artificial respiration and ventilator-associated pneumonia consulted in the DeCS. Full-text articles in Spanish and English from peer-reviewed journals and from the last 5 years were selected. Results: Dysbiosis and poor oral hygiene promote the incidence and development of oral diseases, which in turn promote the incidence of lower respiratory system diseases such as ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill patients. Among the factors involved are aspiration of oral secretions with pathogenic bacteria that colonize the lower respiratory tract, and nutritional deficiencies that compromise the immune system. Although there are some discrepancies, most studies support oral care practices in critically ill patients. Conclusions: The health and care of the oral cavity is the key to a more favorable outcome for critically ill patients.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Objective: This study aimed to review the literature on the efficiency of oral hygiene protocols that used chlorhexidine digluconate as an antimicrobial agent in patients admitted to Intensive Care Units. Methods: To research the protocols, the scientific data platforms Scientific Electronic Library Online and National Library of Medicine were analyzed, using specific descriptors in Portuguese and in English, respectively. Results: Of the 59 studies initially analyzed, 27 articles were read in full and six of these were selected for the study. The studies used chlorhexidine digluconate in different concentrations, 0.05% to 2%. The devices used for oral hygiene varied between toothbrushes, cotton swabs, and gauze. The frequency varied, being performed two or three times a day. Conclusion: Due to the heterogeneity of oral hygiene protocols using chlorhexidine digluconate in Intesive Care Units, presented in the literature, it was not possible to compare them in relation to their efficiency in ventilator-associated pneumonia reduction. (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective This work aimed to report values regarding oral hygiene habits at home during the pandemic and compare the difference with previous oral hygiene habits. Methods This study was performed anonymously and had patients answer an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 11 closed-answer questions (except 1) concerning oral hygiene habits at home at the time of COVID-19 and participant characteristics, including gender and age. A total of 1,136 questionnaires were filled in via a link sent by email to the patients. Results Among the 1,136 patients examined, 32.4% (372) were male and 67.6% (775) were female, and almost half (47.9%) of the patients who answered the questionnaire were aged 18-40 years. Patients who participated in our survey were asked questions related to dental and tongue hygiene. The answers showed that although they had more time during the pandemic, they brushed their teeth less and did not brush their tongues regularly. Conclusion Patients with periodontal problems usually have less time for brushing and do not have good plaque control. The questionnaire showed the opposite, such that the patient's compliance and motivation matters more than time. Thus, dentists and dental hygienists must encourage and make patients understand the importance of oral hygiene at home.

ABSTRACT

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a neoplasia of the sympathetic nervous system and the second most common extracranial malignant solid tumor in childhood. In antineoplastic therapy, oral complications can be observed in antineoplastic therapy, among them oral mucositis (OM). It is an acute mucosa inflammation resulting from the toxicity of chemotherapy drugs. This case report emphasizes the management of OM and its influence on the systemic condition and quality of life. A female patient, nine years old, presented a recurrence of metastatic NB after first-line treatment. She was admitted to the hospital unit for oncological therapy in the pediatric oncology ward, complaining of severe pain in the oral cavity and oropharynx associated with severe febrile pancytopenia. On physical examination, she presented dysphagia and severe weight deficit, which weakened the swallowing of her saliva. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the intraoral exam revealed third-grade OM lesions on the lips, anterior gum, and oropharynx. Treatment consisted of removing local debris, cleaning the oral cavity with 0.12% chlorhexidine, and using a flexible, sterile cotton swab, aiming for daily local microbial control. In addition, photobiomodulation (660 nm, 50 mW, 2 J/cm2, 90 seconds) was applied to the erythematous and hemorrhagic bed, punctually in the areas of the lesion and sweeps in the oropharynx region (interspersed sessions). Racealphatocopherol acetate (vitamin E) was prescribed for antioxidant action and lip hydration. Concomitant with mucositis, the patient had severe febrile pancytopenia, requiring cefepime 150 mg/kg/day, with previous collection of blood cultures, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, fluconazole, hydration, and nutritional support. Blood cultures were negative. The consequences of mucositis contributed to malnutrition and worsened quality of life. It is concluded that the interdisciplinary dental intervention enabled physical and emotional restoration, enabling a better quality of life for the patient (AU).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the caregiver's demand to meet the needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can influence their quality of life. Objective: the objective of the present study was to compare the burden on caregivers of individuals with ASD with individuals neurotypical (N) and to evaluate the correlation of the impact of oral health with the burden on these caregivers. Material and method: participants were divided into two groups: ASD Group (ASD; n=35) and Neurotypical Group (N; n=35). A sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire was administered to caregivers. Caregiver burden was measured using the Burden Interview (BI) questionnaire. The visible plaque index (VPI) of children was analyzed. The data were submitted to statistical analysis (α=5%). Result: in the group ASD, the majority of participants were partially dependent, with the majority being dependent on oral hygiene. In group N, the majority were independent and self-sufficient in oral hygiene. Half of the caregivers in the group ASD felt mild to moderate burden (54.3%), while in group N it was found that more than half of them had no burden (65.7%). In the comparative analysis of data from the BI questionnaire, significant differences were observed between the groups in questions (p <0.001), which are directly related to childcare. Regarding the VPI of children in the group ASD and N groups compared to the level of burden, it was observed that there were no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: ASD caregivers have a greater burden when compared to N caregivers and the degree of burden did not influence the oral hygiene of the child with ASD
